Sam Dethrow was the final act in our Talent Contest, but her theatrical vocal performance to “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from the award-winning musical, Funny Girl, was one to remember. Sam’s expressive performance showed off both her vocal range and acting ability and highlighted that the stage is home for Sam.
While she’s always enjoyed singing, it was just in her sophomore year of high school that she decided to take her singing seriously and her sights set on a theatre career. She has formed strong bonds with high school’s theatre director, Max Cherwin, and band director, Anna Zaino. She’s also been working with vocal coach and our Talent Contest emcee, Brandy Braxton, who encouraged her to enter the contest and first-ever competition.
Sam’s trio of teachers and mentors have helped her rise to new heights with their insights, song selections, lessons, and encouragement. But Sam thanks her mom, Stacy, for being her biggest supporter. “I wouldn’t have the confidence or support in performing that I do without her.”
To anyone nervous about entering their first talent show or competition, Sam says:
“I would say just do it! Nerves only holds you back. When I was younger I used to get so nervous to put myself out there by joining community theatre and I can say my biggest regret is not starting sooner because I love performing so much now.”
In just the past few years Sam has performed at Johnsburg High School, Woodstock Opera House, and Eastern Illinois University. Now she heads to IAAF to compete for the state title. The MCFA wishes Sam luck and that Springfield is a stepping stone to bigger performances.
